Aging In Place

Recently we heard a presentation about how care for the aging has changed over time.  As in many things, the old is somewhat new again.  The elderly used to be cared for by families and friends or their church.  Then group homes became popular followed by the beautiful developments we see today in communities big and small.  One thing that has NOT changed is the impact available funds has to do with what care is available to us.  While touring one of the facilities in the Kansas City area,  I was told the hardest conversation they must have with clients is what happens when they run out of private pay dollars.  Unfortunately, few of the beautiful care centers have spaces for those who can no longer pay for their care.

Over a year  ago the Kansas City Star published a series of articles on "Aging In Place".  It is becoming more popular for many reasons, but in large part due to the cost of the alternative.

We are so excited about the possibility that insurance  companies are looking at helping pay for in home care for those who decide that Aging In Place is something they prefer for as long as they can.

The services we provide are helpful to families who have chosen for the loved one to stay in their home.  We would love to meet with you and talk about how we can help.

The growing need for help in caring for aging family members is the subject of many books, magazine  and newspaper articles.   Here is a link to the Star articles with information you may find helpful.

Are You A Caregiver?

The role of a "Caregiver" can look differently in every situation.  But regardless of who you talk to, if they are a "Caregiver", they are stressed and overworked.

Recently there have been many articles about the Sandwich Generation and even the CLUB sandwich generation.  If you google those terms, you may be surprised to find out that you fit in one of those categories.

One of the hardest things about being a Caregiver is the amount of time that it takes AND the amount of guilt associated with the time allocation both with your family and the person you are caring for.  Fortunately in many situations there are community resources available to make life easier for EVERYONE.

So, what are those services?  Start with the Office of the Aging in your area.  They have many resources and answers to questions.  We are happy to meet and chat about what would make your life better and how we can help.  We are always happy to research questions and help our clients in any way possible.   If we don't have the answers, we will try to find them.

If you are a Caregiver, just give us a call and find out what services we can offer to ease your stress and let your time with your loved one be enjoyable not filled with jobs to be done.

Spring Cleaning

As the weather gets warmer and we spend more time outside, we also have more sunny days and oh my what the sunlight can reveal.  Cobwebs, scratches on woodwork, dirty blinds and windows . . . how did that happen.  We are available to help you with "Spring Cleaning" and you will love what the sunlight reveals.

We recently helped a client move from one location to another and what fun the family had "cleaning" drawers and boxes of things in storage.  What treasures they found.  There were a lot of memories being made as they sat around the stacks of papers and pictures and heard stories old and new.  There was also lots of laughter and a few tears as they found things that brought back memories of special times together.  Sometimes "cleaning" is an adventure and can even be fun!

Whatever your reason for "cleaning",  just give us a call and . . .

February

Being a retired first garde teacher, I am very informed about the monthly units in school curriculum,
Hallmark special days, and of course holidays. February is full of great things to think about.

My students always loved Dental Health week. We always had a visit from a local dentist who br ought them new toothbrushes and floss. As adults over 55, we know that brushing our teeth and flossing is a great heart protector. Of course since this is National Heart month it is also a good time to check with your physician regarding your own heart health. How helpful to have Heart month in the same month as Valentine's Day!

So, take care of your heart - brush, floss, go to your dentist, have a heart checkup with your doctor oh, and also eat some dark chocolate. Research says it is good for the heart!

Happy February
